Coal was found here in 1914, the mining enterprise was set up in 1949, and extraction went on until the end of the twentieth century; in November 1990 a methane explosion started an underground fire. The town today has the Miner's Museum, and it sits on the Vjosa, the river of Vjosa Wild River National Park.
